This is a mandatory item for Ranger School and Sapper Leader Course, and you are required to bring one. This is something you might use once or twice depending what your PACE plan is. We would use this to signal lift and shift fire but it is by no means the only or even preferred way. 240's are loud and expecting someone to hear a whistle over them is foolish, but I've seen it work before.
