For Ranger School, this is a mandatory item, and you are required to bring two large green or brown towels (30" x 50") and two green or brown wash clothes (15" x 24")

For Sapper Leader Course, this is a mandatory item, and you are required to bring two large brown towels (30" x 50") and two brown wash clothes (15" x 24"). 

For Airborne, you are required to bring three towels (30" x 50") and three wash clothes (15" x 24").

For SFAS, this is a mandatory item, and you are required to bring two large towels (30" x 50"). 

I always recommend microfiber towels and not one of the cheap brown ones that is issued. Those never seem to dry and that moisture adds weight to your ruck.
